I won this book from a goodreads giveaway. I thought it was a great middle grade book. Very unique story line, fun characters (I love Dog!), and very well written. As a middle child I can related to Hanks woes, and I appreciate that this book is about Hank learning to accept and embrace who and what he is. When you first dive into this book it seems like its going to be a typical lost boy adventure story, but it turns into something truly unique.

Meet Hank Hudson, middle child in a big family forced to leave their home in Depression-era North Carolina for California. Hank's already used to feeling invisible among his peers, but when the family departs, accidentally leaving Hank behind, his life is placed in jeopardy. Hank and his only friend -- the mysterious, loyal Dog -- set out to catch up with the family on the West Coast, only to find themselves at the nexus of a great and dangerous adventure from the start. I found myself reading well past convenient stopping points, as Hank encounters a couple with a secret, an elusive, fellow invisible hobo-thief, the hostile residents of hopeless Fruitland, NC, a circus troupe, and a sinister monstrous entity attracted to powerful geographic ley lines that run through the forsaken town. "Hank Hudson" is not just for kids--adults will love it, too! Set in the Depression era of the 1930's, we are introduced to Hank, a middle child who is frequently invisible to both his family and the world around him. Dog (a real dog) becomes his faithful companion, and the two of them have a bond that helps them through difficult times. This is a novel about a boy who discovers himself through adversity and learns that his apparent weaknesses can actually become his strengths. This book is filled with humor and compassion, and I found myself instantly engaged from the beginning. Clark Chamberlain does a great job in connecting the reader to the characters, and I look forward to the next "Hank Hudson" adventure.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I preview all the books I let my kids read up to a certain age. Some I just check for content. This book I really got into. It was an enjoyable read, that I will be letting my older kids read. I loved the charters and I loved many of the lines. They are thought provoking, which is something I hope to find in books for my kids. I really want my children to think for themselves. This book teaches you that is OK to be different and find your own way. Its a real treat when an adult writes a kids book, with a deep lesson (or in this case lessons) to be learned. I can't wait to see what happens next! I believe the kid's and I will enjoy the whole series.

Hank seemed to always be invisible to everyone. Even though Hank’s birthday is between his brother Joseph and sister Helen's birthdays, his was always forgotten every year. One day it was decided that, for a better life, the family needed to relocate to California. Hank was excited about the new beginning and thought maybe in California he would no longer seem invisible to everyone. In the midst of preparing and helping his family get ready to travel across the country, ironically, Hank was forgotten and left behind. Follow Hank on his journey as he travels across the country to join his family in California.
Hank Hudson (Volume 1) by Clark Chamberlain is an interesting story because of its fantasy and sci-fi appeal. How would you feel if you were always treated as invisible or forgotten? Just like Hank, anyone would be initially sad and depressed if they were left behind by their family, but being invisible became an asset to Hank and his family in the end. Children of all ages will enjoy Hank Hudson (Volume 1) by Clark Chamberlain because of the twists and turns that happen throughout the story. You can read this to your children or it’s easy enough for children to read on their own; either way they will surely enjoy it. Happy reading!
Clark Chamberlain did an awesome job writing this book. In the beginning, I wasn't sure if I was going to like the book. However, Chamberlain drew me in with his awesome characters and twist in turns. I can't wait to see what happens to Hank, Dog and Stin in "Hank Hudson and the Anubis."
Love this book. I hesitate to give five star reviews as worry about complacency and believe that there is always room for improvement. In this case, it's a great read and worth five stars! Great book for the whole family.
